If you're brand new to cross stitch (welcome!), I recommend reading my "Beginner's Guide to Cross Stitch" and starting with a kit.

The cross stitch kits come with everything you need to complete one full pattern piece with fabric and hoop. Unless you're highly ambitious, I would recommend a more simple pattern for beginners. The smaller the size and fewer colors, the easier it will be to follow your pattern. If you're like me and you enjoy a challenge, then just go for it with whatever pattern you want! That's what frogging was made for.
